  • Drawing

Drawing ... a little information about your course... taught by Sarah Simblet Life drawing You don't need to bring anything specific for this course, but if you have your own favourite pencils etc, please bring them along. We do have some aprons, but depending on how many of you there are, it may be worth bringing your own Drawing from Nature - we recommend you bring... Suitable clothing and footwear for outdoors and rough terrain. Sunglasses to shield eyes from the glare of paper. Sunhat and sunscreen if needed. Day-sack for materials. Water bottle or coffee flask & chocolate :-) etc. Folding stool if you like to use one of them. Or a cushion to sit on the ground. In cool, damp weather, a plastic bag is helpful to sit on directly, or put the cushion in to protect it. Or use a cut piece of insulated camping-sleeping mat that rolls fit in your Day-sack. Basic mono-chrome drawing materials are provided (pencils, charcoal, ink, pens & brushes) but you may also wish to bring your favourite art materials too. Especially if you enjoy working with colour. This is an optional extra. Sketchbook making - you will make this on day one of 'Drawing from Nature': Please bring some strudy but not too thick cardboard for the front and back covers of your sketchbook... bring bigger than A3 even if you choose to make a smaller book. Bring a generously sized piece of cloth to cover your book with. You may prefer a plain neutral linen, or an exuberantly colourful, patterned fabric. Most kinds of cloth are suitable. It is only important that it is strong, it folds easily, and it does not stretch... one of our students used a colourful tea-towel on a previous course although this resulted in a small sketchbook. Plain white thread is provided. However, if you choose a colourful cloth for your cover, you may also wish to bring a reel of complimentary or contrasting coloured thread for attaching the cover as one row of stitches will show on the front and back of the book. Inside most hard-back books there is a beautiful 'end paper'. As an optional extra, you may wish to bring some colourful or pattered paper for making end papers. (Not necessary. Just if you wish.) Everyone will create their own unique size and shape of sketchbook. However, as a rough size-guide for buying cloth or end paper, people usually make books that are between A5 and A2 in size, and on average about A4. Size is entirely to suit your personal wish. We will provide good quality acid-free warm-white cotton cartridge paper for your pages. As an optional extra, some people enjoy adding in other kinds of paper which they bring with them. For example delicate rice paper used for calligraphy can look beautiful (available on e-bay) or coloured, textured drawing papers. or recycled packaging and brown paper depending upon the style of book that would suit you. • Photography

Photography ... a little information about your course... taught by David White Information from David about your day The day starts with a brief discussion of where we are all at on our photography journey, a little presentation on the theory we need for the day around exposure vs shutter speed vs ISO, to ensure we are all on the same page, then a chat over creativity and composition before we visit one / two sites locally. Still Life and Product Photography Workshop We will focus on building impactful images that communicates well to any given audience. This might be an artistic composition or an image designed to show off a piece of artwork to it’s full potential. We will work though building subject, composition, lighting, camera settings, phone capabilities, editing, and publishing. For the workshop you will need as much as possible of the following. Don’t worry if you don’t have anything here - I will provide some kit to fill gaps. A smartphone with reasonable camera A tablet or laptop (if you have time, install the Adobe Lightroom software (trial version is free). A camera A tripod A lead or card reader to transfer images from your camera to device. For all of the above, please ensure the batteries are fully charged and / or you have a charger. If you have any specific objects or artworks, yours of otherwise, do bring them along. Also if you have at fabrics or other portable backgrounds you think might work, also bring them. What you need to bring kit wise for the photography in nature course The course is going to be more about composition, simplification of the natural world in photography and creativity than a very technical learning of kit exercise so we won’t need a great deal of lenses. Talking of lenses, if you have a camera with interchangeable lenses, we will be tending towards standard to slight zoom range in order to frame and isolate natural scenes, so we will work in the range (full frame) of 24-200mm. There is no harm in bringing more lenses in the car but for the walking element of the course will be try and carry only a couple of lenses, water, a snack and a tripod (if available). There is no requirement for a tripod on this course but having one does open up options for a wider range of shots. No filters are required on this course. Bring a memory card big enough to store at least 100 shots at your camera’s max quality (RAW ideally). And don’t forget to charge your batteries. Bring a bag to hold your kit. If you have a laptop/card reader with Adobe Lightroom, this will be very useful for the end of the course, as I end the day doing a quick showcase of processing some images from the day in Lightroom. Clothing In terms of clothing - be prepared for a cool day with light drizzle though to hot sun. Wales can be quite changeable. Come wearing sturdy footwear such as light weight summer walking boots as we will be on our feet for the main part of day. We also suggest you bring warm clothes and wet weather gear. Some other things you might want to bring are binoculars and sun cream! Packed lunch You will probably be eating your lunch on location… so please bring a packed lunch with you, as well as drinks and ‘in-the-field’ snack such as cereal bars. Photography locations The exact locations are weather dependent but may include Lady Bagot's Drive and the Offa’s Dyke area of the Clwydian hill range. In less favourable weather will be visit one of these locations and spend time in the studio building still life natural compositions to photography and look at editing RAW files in Adobe Lightroom. Car sharing If COVID guidelines allow, we will ideally car share to locations… but please do let us know if not comfortable having others in your cars as this is totally understandable. Please bring masks and hand gel for car share. You may want to print this page too! Click here to go back to the main list of 'everything you need to know'

She began with a two-year apprenticeship in 2009 in Oxford and became a full time jeweller in 2016. You can follow Claire Acworth Jewellery Much of her current work is commission based, having built a reputation for distinctive design and high quality work. She breathes life into old unworn jewellery by using the original stones or gold to create a contemporary new design. Her work is organic and sculptural, textured with hammer marks or imprinted with the delicate veins of a leaf. She also uses semi-precious stones & simple found objects such as pebbles or sea glass which are transformed into elegant new forms. Claire's work has been inspired by nature, by contemporary designers, & also by the rich bold designs of African jewellery & sumptuous silver of India. Stories from our students A fantastic day! Claire is incredibly knowledgeable about her craft and was a very supportive teacher. She helped us all realise our individual designs and within a day we each made a beautiful piece of jewellery that also serves as a physical reminder of the wonderful experience we shared together. Claire’s teaching approach was very relaxed and adaptive, which worked well for us, because we all had very different designs that we were working from. - Naomi 'This course was just what I had hoped for, starting with the basics then progressing to a final product. The fact that Claire insisted I did everything myself demonstrated that I could do it. With the sense that Claire was also exploring possibilities demonstrated that jewellery making will be an ongoing learning track and that it was not important where I was on the track.' - Tim 'I came not knowing what I would be capable of creating. With Claire’s guidance, I was able to accomplish everything I hoped to do. The course was the right balance between structured and flexible to allow me to gain all the necessary skills needed, whilst keeping my creativity. I was worried that I would get bogged down with lots of technical information, but I found Claire very clear and her teaching was gentle but informative. It suited me perfectly. Claire was also very encouraging and made me feel very proud of what I created.' - Bronte I really enjoyed the two days. It was challenging, fascinating and rewarding. I was pleased with my personal achievements (with some excellent extra help of Claire). I feel that I have a basic level of confidence in my new gained skills, with a lot more to learn, of course. - Ken I spent 3 days at Wernog Wood at the beginning of February doing a silver jewellery workshop, which I have been planning to do for some time. It was so worth the wait. Claire is a very talented silversmith. Her tuition is delivered in a very encouraging, patient but informative way. As an intermediate jewellery maker, I learnt so much from her, both in learning new techniques as well as improving certain skills. With her support I was able to take my design ideas to the production of 2 pieces of jewellery that I will treasure. - Olivia Had such a great few days jewellery making with Claire, such an immersive and unique experience and overall lovely atmosphere! So amazing to be able to come away with pieces I designed and created myself and now wear every day, will definitely be back! - Georgia Details Dates Costs Tutor Stories Silver jewellery making course learn how to make jewellery Learn how to set a gemstone Casting silver learn how to reticulate silver Learn to solder Learn flush stone setting Pendant making Learn to design and make jewellery Filing silver Flush set rubies Stone setting course Jewellery making class Learn to set a cabochon Bangle making course 1/1 Upcoming Dates Wed, 22 May Bespoke jewellery making (rings) - May 2024 / Wernog Wood Sold Out Details 22 May 2024, 10:00 – 16:30 This is a privately organised course, please get in touch to organise your own bespoke group session. Raku ... a little information about your course... taught by Carla Pownall Bringing pots with you We encourage you to bring six to ten pots with you. So that there are no disappointing kiln related incidents for you or others, your pots can only be used if they meet the following criteria! maximum size 4" wide and 6" high - if your pots are too big, it will mean a lot of waiting around for firing as few pots will fit into the kiln. use Raku clay only (please ask if you are unsure) - Please uses Ashraf Hanna or any other white body Raku clay. all pots must be bisque fired to a temperature less than 900 degrees C (not more) burnish half of your pots (i.e. 3-5 of them) and leave the others un burnished. Take time to do this well as this will affect the quality of your naked Raku finish. Carla can make your pots for you If you would like Carla to make your pots for you, she will be very happy to do so, but please let us know at least 6 weeks before your course begins. These will be £20 per pot and will be made to a high standard of finish, half of which will be ready burnished for you. Clothing Wear non-flammable clothing (i.e. natural materials such as cotton or wool, not synthetic) Sturdy leather footwear and definitely no open toed shoes!
