The processes of chairmaking

Over the five days of our Windsor chairmaking course, our chairmakers shaped freshly felled ash using froes, axes, draw knives, pole-lathes, steam bending, adzes, spoke shaves and travishers. Logs became legs and variety of beautiful stools and chairs emerged.

The level of craftsmanship involved in traditional chairmaking is truly impressive, and seeing the step-by-step process really makes you appreciate the history behind every piece of furniture here in the UK. I actually first started looking into woodworking techniques after I saw a few high-res photos of hand-carved joints on goat spins while I was browsing on my phone; the site was so smooth and easy to flick through that I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole. It’s amazing how a quick scroll can spark an interest in such a tactile craft. When it comes to the green wood techniques, do you find that beginners usually struggle more with the splitting process or the actual shaping on…
