  • Wernog Wood | Work in progress | North Wales

WORK IN PROGRESS It took us four years to find the perfect peaceful spot to run our courses; a place where our visitors can truly escape the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. After traipsing around nearly fifty properties, we finally found Wernog Wood hidden within this beautiful secluded woodland. If you look at the photos below, you can probably see why we fell in love with it. Click here to watch a birds eye video of Wernog Wood as we found it when we arrived. When we arrived in September 2017, the house had not been lived in for 15 years and our predecessor, Dot, had lived here alone for forty years prior to that. As you can imagine, the whole place needs considerable renovation... luckily Rob is a multi-skilled builder and mechanic who is up for a challenge... but we were keen to get the business up and running before completing house renovations. So if you are planning to pay us a visit, don’t be surprised to find some piles of rubble and a rough looking house… but the rest of the place is beautiful... please bear with us! We hope you enjoy it so much that you will come back again to see how we have developed.

Mike is largely self taught with a brief mentorship in Ruthin. He began his trade by buying old leather jackets & restitching them into new things, using simply a nail as an awl & a sharpened fork as a pricking iron to make even stitching holes. Seven years into his journey now, bespoke artwork on leather is the mainstay of the business. From belts, wallets, hip flasks and luggage tags to custom motorcycle seats, plaques and murals, the enthusiasm for this craft grows with every new piece . Working mostly to commission with customers from California to New Zealand & everywhere in between, Mike is looking forward to hosting classes with the hope of enthusing others to pick up the awl and thread, to create and to support British owned suppliers that help to keep this rewarding & fascinating craft alive. • Mosaic

Mosaic ... a little information about your course... taught by Tess Williams A message from Tess I am very much looking forward to welcoming you on the mosaic course! A few things you need to know. Clothing and shoes Please come in old clothes. Grouting can be very messy. If you have an old apron please do bring it, but its not essential if you don’t mind your clothes getting mucky (Wernog Wood also have a few aprons that can be borrowed). I will also bring protective glasses and masks but feel free to bring your own. Closed toe shoes are essential. We will be working with and cutting glass so we want to ensure your lovely feet are protected from stray shards. Tools and materials (let me know if you think you might want to purchase tools prior to course) I will be bringing the all the tools, and materials needed. This will include cutting tools, adhesive and grout. We will be using fast setting glue to allow grouting in the time provided. I will bring a selection of mosaic tiles and glass sheets but if you want to bring any of your own materials (stones / shells etc) please feel free to do so. Please note that unsealed terracotta is not the best for outdoor as it can crack. I will bring a selection of wheeled and tile nippers, as well as cutters for sheet glass. Please let me know if you think you would like to keep yours after the course (you can decide at the time but helpful for me to know if you definitely want these). (If you are bringing your own please let me know as soon as you can). Costs for tools range between @£14 - £24 depending on the tool. Exact price to be confirmed nearer the time depending on supplier etc. Examples of these tools can be seen here. Wheeled nippers (good for glass and making specific shapes): https://hobby-island.co.uk/collections/mosaic-and-glass-tools/products/tools-and-sundries-wheeled-nippers-piece Side tile nippers (good for some glass and most ceramics etc): https://hobby-island.co.uk/collections/mosaic-and-glass-tools/products/tools-and-sundries-side-biter-piece Glass cutter (essential for all sheet glass cutting): https://hobby-island.co.uk/collections/mosaic-and-glass-tools/products/tools-and-sundries-glass-cutter-with-oil-reservoir-and-carbide-blades-piece Design and base board size (let me know if different shape required prior to course if possible) If you can, please come with a basic idea of the design you want to do. Don’t worry about pattern detail as I will go through the different andamento (pattern flow) with you on the first day. If you have absolutely no idea, don’t worry, I can help you with this and will bring a few books with me for reference, but beware that the longer this takes the less time you will have to completely finish by the end of the course. Don’t worry though, if you don’t finish, I will make sure you have the skills and materials to finish at home. We will aim to finish the sticking of tiles by lunchtime of the second day, and spend the afternoon grouting etc. I will aim to cut the base boards prior to the course. Unless you let me know otherwise I will cut these to approx. 24 cm (w) x 30 cm (h) (slightly wider that A4). If you would prefer a different shape please let me know a week or so before hand. You can work on any shape but we need to be realistic on what can be achieved in a couple of days, so something about the same area as A4 size is ideal. Looking forward to meeting you! You may want to print this page too! Click here to go back to the main list of 'everything you need to know'

He sees that the things we use and surround ourselves with in our day-to-day lives are getting cheaper, mass produced, destined to last less and less time. His reaction to this is to spend time making the most basic things in life – something to eat with, something to eat from, something to sit on. To make them well, with an understanding and respect for trees they came from. Just help yourself and no need to bring anything with you. LUNCH During full day courses, we provide a simple honest lunch such as bread, cheese, salad and soup , unless stated otherwise on your course de scription . When you book your course, you will be asked about dietary requirements and we will ensure each of these are met. ' One thing I will very fondly remember is sitting underneath the tarpaulin tent, eating amazing plentiful lunches cooked by Claire and Rob and chatting with the friendly group that had been brought together by this course, a very memorable week that will not be forgotten.' EVENING MEALS Evening meals are down to you, however we are very happy to cook for you if you are arriving the night before the course starts. Our formula for evening meals is to team up ‘chefs’, two at a time to cook for the rest of the group. We discuss the common denominator for dietary requirements, so that everyone can eat whatever is on the menu. This all adds to the fun and results in some surprising recipe choices... we've got lots of recipe books if you don't know what to cook. You will have use of a spacious well equipped kitchen and living space, or a wood fired pizza oven, fire pit & fresh spring water. This may sound terrifying, but there is absolutely no obligation for you to cook if you really don't want to. If you would like to give it a go, there are often confident cooks, and those who are less so... we just suggest you choose your partner well! People often tell us that the mention of cooking for others was rather a daunting prospect, but a day or two into the course they fully enter into the spirit of it, and our sociable evening meals become one of the highlights of the course and really help to bond the group. The bar is raised night after night and the food just gets better and better. ...you won't regret or forget it... INGREDIENTS You don't need to bring any ingredients with you, or even think about it before you come. That's a different matter if you like baking, as biscuits and cakes are always welcome... so feel free to bring any of those with you! You won't have to go anywhere near a shop either as we will do that bit for you.... you only need to decide on your cooking day what ingredients you need... and give us your shopping list. We work on a kitty basis, normally working out at £ 9 ish per day.

Showers and loos! We have lovely hot showers and loos available for our courses and campers. Rob has built everything by hand including all the wriggly tin cubicles, with a few small wooden details made by Claire. There is a selection of photos on the shower room wall which pay tribute to three old Severn Valley Railway carriages which had once stood on this spot. In their heyday they had been solid wooden carriages which had each carried three horses with a separate cabin for their tender. We had thought about doing these carriages up as cabins for campers, but there was so much work to do to get these to a usable condition that we have finally decided to donate them to a railway enthusiast who has time to do them justice. Rob has enough on his plate without this little project as well!
