An introduction to woodcarving

Over this explorative four days, Cassidie Alder will give you the opportunity to explore a variety of age old woodcarving techniques.
She will guide you through chip carving, crafting crisp geometric patterns; relief carving, where designs like leaves, animals, or flowing motifs rise from the surface; letter cutting, to create elegant inscriptions; and carving in the round, shaping fully three-dimensional figures.
Using fine-grained lime wood, you will gain confidence with your chisels to bring your ideas to life. By the end of the course, you will have the skills and assurance to create unique, hand-carved pieces full of character and charm.

Cassidie Alder discovered her passion for wood carving through a varied journey of woodworking pursuits, including joinery, treehouse building, and historic timber framing. This hands-on experience eventually led her to enrol in a three-year Classical Wood Carving course at the City & Guilds of London Art School — a pivotal moment that confirmed she had found the discipline she wanted to dedicate herself to.
Her work is now primarily commission-based, spanning a wide range of styles and scales, each piece reflecting her deep respect for traditional techniques and her finely honed craftsmanship.
