The language of watercolour

Join artist Daniel Lopez for a four-day watercolour retreat in the inspiring surroundings of Wernog Wood.

Through demonstrations, guided exercises and one-to-one support, students will learn to paint with confidence while focusing on atmosphere, light and movement. Techniques include washes, layering, composition and expressive approaches using natural elements.

Daily plein air sessions in this incredible setting encourage observation and intuitive responses to nature, while structured teaching and open studio time provide space to develop a personal voice. This retreat blends learning, experimentation and reflection within a truly unique environment.

We recommend you bring your own materials but if you don't normally work in watercolour, we can provide a recommended shopping list or we can offer a basic materials set for an additional £75 to get you started, payable during your course.

Daniel Lopez is a Spanish-born artist based in Birmingham, celebrated for his large-scale watercolours that explore the interplay of water, atmosphere and natural elements within urban and natural settings.

His paintings are both expressive and moody, capturing fleeting moments of light, movement and place with bold washes and delicate detail. Often collaborating with nature itself — allowing rain to shape the flow of ink and pigment — his work reveals a poetic tension between control and chance.

Alongside his studio practice, Daniel is a dedicated tutor, encouraging students to discover their own expressive voices through watercolour.
