Rush baskets in miniature
See course details, dates, costs, tutors & stories from students below

Discover the art of rush basketry with Rosie Farey. Using common club rush she has harvested from the Somerset levels, you will weave either a beautiful miniature 'Sea Urchin' basket in March, or a set of round or square placemats for your table in November.
You will learn traditional weaving techniques including check weave, pairing, and track border, adapted for small-scale creations that celebrate the rich natural hues of rush.
This workshop explores the delicate balance between a contemporary interpretation of traditional craftsmanship, and will allow you to experience the meditative nature of transforming natural materials into intricate
and beautiful handmade objects.

Rosie works predominantly on a small scale using natural materials such as Bulrush and Common Juncus to create fine, decorative & functional baskets. Each basket is unique, defined by the unpredictability of natural materials. The meditative rhythm of weaving is the essence of her practice, using simple traditional techniques adapted to her distinctive style.
Traditional crafts seem to be inherent in the Farey family as her mother Mandy teaches basketry, and her brothers Joe & Fred teach timberframe building here in Wernog Wood.
