Raku - experiment with the unexpected - 30 August 2026

Single-day Raku course with Melina Xenaki

Raku is known for its unpredictability and dramatic results – and it’s a lot of fun! This low-temperature firing technique involves removing pots from the kiln while still red-hot, before using rapid cooling, reduction and different decorative techniques to transform their surfaces.

Please bring two bisque-fired pots in white or buff stoneware clay, NO bigger than 12cm wide by 20cm high. If you’re unable to bring your own, please contact us in advance as we may be able to provide suitable bisque-fired pots for £15 each.

During the day you’ll prepare and decorate your pots, experimenting with two different glazes and techniques which might include latex masking, horsehair and feathers. You will then take part in two Raku firings, removing the glowing pots from the kiln using long tongs before reduction and cooling reveal their wonderfully unpredictable finishes.

No previous Raku experience is needed and Melina will guide you through the whole process.

• Materials (although an additional £15 will be charged for any pot that you buy from Melina)
