Recommended Materials List – Wernog Wood watercolour workshop

Below is a list of recommended materials for the workshop. However, I would like to stress something important: this is simply a guide. There is absolutely no need to have everything on the list, and many of the materials you already use will work perfectly well.

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable working with your own tools.

Brushes

It is useful to have a variety of brush shapes and sizes.

Basic recommendation:

• Large mop brush (size 10–12)

• Flat wash brush or hake brush (25–35 mm)

• Medium round brush

• Small round brush for details

• Fine liner/rigger brush

Watercolours

If possible, I would recommend artist-quality watercolours. There are excellent options at different price points.

Recommended brands:

• MaimeriBlu (excellent quality, premium price)

• White Nights (very affordable with outstanding quality and some beautiful unique colours)

There is no need to own a huge collection of colours. In watercolour, less is often more.

Ideally, you should have:

• A warm and cool version of each primary colour

• A few neutrals

• A selection of personal favourite colours

For example:

Yellows

• Lemon Yellow (cool)

• Cadmium Yellow (warm)

Blues

• Phthalo Blue (cool)

• Ultramarine Blue (warm)

Reds / Oranges

• Pyrrol Orange

• Cadmium Red

Neutrals and specialty colours

• Titanium White

• Lavender

• Turquoise

• Neutral Tint

• Violet Shadows

• Indigo

• Burnt Sienna or Burnt Umber

• Ochres

• Lunar Black (a particularly interesting granulating colour)

Feel free to choose only some of these according to your preferences. This is simply an example of a fairly complete palette.

Paper

Recommended:

• 100% cotton watercolour paper

I personally use Saunders Waterford, either Cold Pressed (NOT) or Rough.

Any format or size is perfectly fine.

I will mainly be working on:

• Quarter sheets (approximately 38 × 28 cm)

• Half sheets

Blocks glued on all four sides are also excellent.

I would also encourage you to bring some of the paper you normally use. If possible, choose 100% cotton watercolour paper.

Watercolour sketchbooks and blocks are also welcome.

Other Materials

• Sketchbook for notes and preliminary sketches

• Spray bottle (Wernog Wood has some very small ones!)

• Portable outdoor easel (if you have one) (Wernog Wood has just one!)

• Folding chair if you enjoy working seated outdoors (optional)

• Soft pencil (2B–4B)

• Kneaded eraser

Welcome to bring any of the following but Wernog Wood has some of the following

• Water container 

• Kitchen roll or absorbent paper towels

• A lightweight rigid board to support your paper 

• Kraft tape or masking tape

Everything above is simply a recommendation, not a list of essentials. If you normally work with different materials and feel comfortable using them, that is absolutely fine.
