A message from Rachele

Thank you for booking onto my Katagami workshop. I’m looking forward to sharing this wonderful technique with you.

If you like, you can start thinking about a stencil design beforehand. Around 10cm works well, particularly a motif that can be repeated, but please don’t worry if you arrive without an idea – I’ll bring plenty of books for inspiration and we’ll cover designing for stencils during the course.

Fabric: 

• I’ll provide some fabric as part of the course materials, so there’s no need to buy anything specially. If you happen to have cotton or linen at home that you’d like to print on, feel free to bring some along – anything up to around 1 metre, or smaller pieces roughly A4–A3 size, would be useful. If you’d particularly like to experiment or make lots of samples, you’re welcome to bring a little more. Please make sure any fabric you bring has been pre-washed.

Please bring:

• An apron if you have a favourite, but Wernog Wood have plenty!

• A bag or bowl to take wet fabric home.

• Old clothes and non-slip shoes, as indigo will stain and the floor can get a little wet.

If you happen to have any of the following, feel free to bring them along – but please don’t buy anything specially as I’ll have equipment available to use:

• Scalpel with a new, sharp blade (I use a Swann Morton with a No. 11 blade)

• Cutting mat

• Any stencils you’d like to try - but only if you happen to have them already!

• A bookbinding hole punch, if you have one
